Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens
London
Revived in the eighteenth century by Jonathan Tyers, Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens brought art and spectacle into public life. Music by Handel, painted pavilions by Hogarth, and sculpture by Roubiliac formed a setting frequented by figures such as Samuel Johnson, Horace Walpole, Alexander Pope, and Fanny Burney.
